Or: What's a Bored Engineer to Do?
By Mark Miner
I checked out a copy of
Lean Thinking from our corporate library in hopes of learning more about this method of working. I'm not very far into it yet, and we'll see if I like it as well as Jim Collins' work, but it shows promise. What is an engineer to do, though, when he has stretches of time not claimed by work, just waiting for the vendor I monitor to screw up? So, in the interest of redeeming the time, I have taken all of Orbital's online Lean training, and now I have the book. I might try to become a certified Lean Champion. Why do executives like clever (read: "cute") names for things? Oh well.
Today Lean, tomorrow six sigma? We'll see. I still think industrial engineers are sketchy.
