Why should I support Indie music? A bumper sticker said to, but it didn't
provide any supporting arguments.
Now, if I know Indie-music folk (and I may be one of them on
the inside), they should be appalled at this hypocrisy. They are the anti-slogan folk. They know it, I know it, and Indies hate canned phrases with no thought behind
them. In keeping with their spirit of
minimally logical lyrics and repetition, the bumper sticker should perhaps have
said:

But that is a little long.
It might only fit on a Hummer bumper, and there is no way they would be
seen driving that.
Make no mistake, I just bought albums by the Decemberists
and the Flaming Lips, and they are great to listen to. I mean, I like and appreciate their
music. It's fun. I just find the whole disaffectation
image to be somewhat off-putting. Music
is for enjoying, and that goes for Goths, emos, punks, and classical
dilettantes alike.
